The Calling

God laid it on my heart to create this movie script. It is my hope that it will work the Gospel into the heart of some soul. Because it is not in book form, it will read differently but we have placed it on the web site because we believe whatever God gives you, it is to share.

The Calling

Scene 1 – Daycare

Open with camera as 1st person moving outside a child daycare (credits run).  The camera moves into the facility and into the playground where a little girl is being bullied.  The bully is another little girl (G1) that is throwing mud on the new dress of another little girl (Hannah).  Hannah has a tear in her eye and sits there motionless until G1 and her friends get tired of harassing her.  Scene moves forward to lunch time.  G1 is carrying a treat to her table and drops it.  The teacher notices and says that she is sorry but that they only had enough for 1 each and maybe she can get 2 treats next time.  Hannah (with mud stains on her new dress) notes all this and when the teacher walks away takes her treat and walks over to G1 and sets it in front of her and walks back to her table.  The teacher turns just in time to see Hannah do this.  When Hannah’s mother picks her up, the teacher tells the mother what Hannah did.  Dialogue not needed, just looks and facial expressions to indicate conversation.

Scene 2 – Hannah at home with parents

(Mother and Hannah are in the kitchen fixing dinner for father who is to be home soon.)

Mother – Hannah, how did your day at school go?

Hannah – Fine.

M – Anything interesting happen at school.

H – Mrs. Lipscomb gave us a treat today.  It was very nice of her.  I think she bought it herself.

M – What was it?

H – A chocolate cup cake.

M – That is your favorite.  I bet you ate the whole thing.

H – I gave it to a friend.

M – Was this the “friend” that threw mud on your dress?

H – Yes…

M – Why did you give your cupcake away?

H – She dropped hers.  I think her mother and father are being mean to each other and she cries a lot when she is by herself.

M – Why do you think her parents are not getting along?

H – I don’t know.

M – Well it was very nice of you, and I have a treat for you too.  I bought it on the way home.  Here!

H – A chocolate cup cake.  Thank you.

M – You can eat it now but we won’t tell your father that you have been eating cupcakes before dinner.

H – We can save some for him.

M – That’s alright sweetie, I got one for him too.  I love you.  You’re very special and I don’t ever want you to lose that.

H – I love you too.

(That night the father tucks Hannah in.)

Father – I heard you had a big day today pumpkin.

H – Every day is a big day when you are little.

F – I don’t think you are little; I think your old and wise.

H – I’m not old, I’m only 4 years old.

F – But you have an old soul.  (points to her heart) And I love that old soul.  Don’t ever let it get away from you.

H – What is an old soul?

F – It is something that everyone wants but nobody is willing to work for and you were born with it.  That is one of the things that makes you so special.

H – Daddy, I think you’re special too.  You’re the most special daddy in the whole world.

F – I am just trying to keep up with you.  If I can do that, I might end up special.  I love you pumpkin.

H – Love you too daddy.

F- Good night.  Sleep tight. Let angels keep you till morning bright.

H – Good night.

(Mother and father retire to their bedroom.)

M – She has a wonderful heart.

F – She gets that from me.  But you knew that.

M – I know no such thing, you were late from work and didn’t even call.

F – Sorry meant to but was so caught up, crazy seems to permeate most things I do.

M – If you are going to try to keep this good heart facade going you are going to have to show it a little more.

F – I will cause I love you and Hannah too much not to.

M – Love you too.

F – I am looking forward to a nice, quiet sleep.  It is one of the perks of being this far from everything, the silence.

M – Yeah let’s have a little more of it could we.  Good night.

Mother and father lay still for a minute then the father sits up in bed.

F – Did you turn on the dishwasher?

M – No, the dishes have been done for over an hour.

F – Has the refrigerator been running a lot?

M – This is no time to do maintenance on our appliances.  I’ve been trying to get you to fix things around here but not at 10 at night.  Go to sleep.

F – (Lays back down and a minute later pops back up.)  I’m hearing a noise in the house.  A hum or tone or something.  I’ve got to find out what it is.  (Father gets up goes to the kitchen, utility room, bathrooms, den finally back to his bed and lays down.)

M – Did you find it?

F – No and it’s still there.  Don’t you hear it?

M – Mother listens.  Yes, but it is faint.

F – I need to know what it is before I can go to sleep.

M – Fine, just don’t keep me awake doing it.

(Father gets up and 10 minutes later comes back to bedroom to find mother sleeping.)

F – Wake up.  (shakes mother).  Wake up (in hushed tone)

M – I told you not to wake me.  What happened to that good heart thing you were going for?

F – you have to hear this.  Come on, get up.

M – Noooo….

F – Yes, it has to do with Hannah.

M – What?  (jumps out of bed)

(Father and mother tip toe into Hannah’s room and pushes door open slowly.  Both speak in hushed tones.)

F – Listen…

M – What is it?

F – I don’t know.  I’ve checked every corner, unplugged every device, looked under her bed, checked her bed to make sure she doesn’t have a toy on and nothing, nothing.

M – Then where is it coming from?

F – Hannah.  It appears to be coming from Hannah…   somehow.

M – (Gasps and sets down next to Hannah on her bed.)  Hannah… Hannah… Wake up sweetie.  Mommy needs to talk to you.

H – Wakes and rubs her eyes.  I love you mommy.  (Tone stops and parents look at each other perplexed)

M – I love you too.  Are you feeling alright, is there anything different going on tonight?

H – Only thing different is I am usually asleep.  (Mother and father laugh nervously)

M – Sorry sweetie, we need to check your bed in case we forgot to put something up. (Mother picks up Hannah and walks to the other side of the room with concerned look on face.  Dad searches bed from top to bottom and pulls back covers then sheets all the way down to the mattress.  Turns to mother.)

F – Nothing,

M – Maybe it was our imaginations.

F – Both of us?

M – Well, maybe I was influenced by the one who’s crazy spills over into the rest of their life.

F – Alright, alright I may be crazy but it kept me from going insane.

M – Come on Willy or Waylon or whoever you are.  Let’s get her back to bed.  We all have to get up early crazy or not.

(Parents make bed and put Hannah back to bed – says goodnight – Parents get back in bed without saying anything.  As they lay there in the silence the tone starts again.  Father gets up goes to Hannah’s room and listens then comes back to bed.)

F – (to mother) I will get an electrician from work to come over Monday if it doesn’t stop by then. (Mumbles to himself…) I’m really going to get a reputation for crazy when I tell him he has to come over after 10 o’clock at night.

M – Did you say something.

F – Nothing.

(Monday evening.  Tone has occurred every night after Hannah goes to sleep.  The electrician is talking to the father and mother after Hannah is asleep and tone has started.  The lights are out in the entire house and they are walking around with flash lights.)

E – Well it is nothing on the grid or plugged into an electrical outlet.  Whole house is disconnected from power and you still got a noisy room.  I understand this thing is not loud but I’m with you on this, I need complete silence when I sleep.

F – We’re more concerned in what the source is then the noise itself.

E – I borrowed a supersensitive microphone from a friend but you guys need to find a place to sit and be absolutely quiet. (As he is putting on a set of headphones)

M – (to father) lets go in my art room.  (After sitting down – whispering) What are we going to do if he can’t find anything.

F – Fire him?

M – Seriously.

F – I don’t know.  I guess take her to the doctor if the electrician thinks it is coming from Hannah.

(Father leans against the easel and knocks it over.  From a distant room electrician says “Owww, my ears”)

F – (yells) Sorry.  (Electrician yells again.)

(A few minutes later the electrician calls from living room.)

E – All done.   The noise or tone seems to be coming from your little girl.  Hannah is her name?

M & F – Yes

E – That is all I got and you can fire me if you want but you still have to pay me.

F – Boy, that microphone is sensitive isn’t it.  Thanks Charlie, I’ll see you at work tomorrow.  You’ve helped a great deal.

E – Nothing to it.  Try to get some sleep.  And you’re right if it was my little girl, I’d take her to the doctor.  Night folks.

M – Nice meeting you.  (After electrician is gone turns to father and says) I will make an appointment in the morning with Doctor Conners. (Father acknowledges)

Scene 3 In the doctor’s office

(Doc to mother sitting in examining room)

Doc – (to mother) I am not doubting you but this is very unusual.

M – We are very worried doctor but it is because it is so strange that we are worried.  If we just knew what it was, we might be able to live with it but it is the not knowing that hurts.  (Tear in mother’s eye – daughter squeezes mother’s hand)

H – Mom, don’t worry I’m alright.

Doc – That’s correct.  You’re as healthy as any child can be and the reason, we are treating you so special, little girl, is because you are special and we want to keep you that way.  (Turns to mother) I have a few more things to look into.  I will do some research and ask around.  Maybe my wife and I can stop by Friday night on the way home from our date night to see for ourselves this little girl that sings in her sleep.

H – (laughing) I don’t sing in my sleep, I go mmmmmmmmm (monotone – still laughing.)

Doc – Well, you don’t mind me recording you, do you?  We might make it into a song that all little children can sleep to.  We might find another child that makes a different tone and make a band.  Call yourself the tone – ettes.

H – You’re too silly to be a doctor.  (Still laughing)

Doc – And you’re too healthy to be seeing a doctor.  Get out of my office right now and go play with your friends.

M – We will be looking for you Friday and thank you so very much.

Doc – don’t mention it.

Scene 4 (Doctor at a party on date night a few weeks later.  Doctor Conners (Kevin) is mingling with the crowd and walks up to his host, John who is having a conversation with another guest.)

H – Kevin, glad you could make it.  I guess this is a night for doctors.  Kevin this is Doctor James Wyatt.  James this is Doctor Kevin Connors.

K – Doctor Wyatt…

J – Call me James.

K – James, what field are you in, pediatrics, neurology, PCP?

J – I am not a medical doctor.

K – Sorry I guess I am around so many I naturally assumed…

J – That’s alright doctor…

K – Kevin

J – That’s alright Kevin.  I am in research at the university outside of town.

K – And what is your doctorate in?

J – Physics with a minor in biology.  Our research is mainly in acoustical holography.

K – That’s impressive, especially to an old country doctor like me.  Seems we do have a little in common with your biology degree.

J – I don’t think I buy that country doctor spill.  The technology we have available today and the resources make it complicated in any field.

K – That is true.  I was trying to keep my life simple by moving to the country where everybody works on a farm and it keeps everybody healthy so I wouldn’t have to do much but it seems there is no escape.

J – Sounds like a problem within a problem.

K – Speaking of sounds, no pun intended, I have a patient, a little 4-year-old girl that has a very unique problem.   Sometime after she goes to sleep, usually within an hour, it appears that a tone or hum is coming out or her.  Her parents brought her in and I’ve done all the tests and they come up negative.  The only one that indicated anything was the ultrasound and the machine broke right in the middle of the test.  I went by her house to confirm what the parents said and it was true.  They have had the house checked out and they could find nothing.  Every time they wake their daughter the tone stops.  They tried to change bedrooms but the sound follows her.  Strangest thing I have ever seen.

J – Sounds interesting, no pun intended either.  Is it loud or soft?

K – Soft, very soft.

J – Does it seem to be coming from a certain part of her body.

K – That’s the darndest thing.  I used my stethoscope and went from head to toe and even though the tone gets louder when I use the stethoscope, it is the same volume where ever I place it.  Strange.

J – (James starting to look suspicious) John has not put you up to this?

K – Oh no.  I wish it were a joke.  The parents are worried sick not knowing if this is a precursor to something really bad.  Sometimes I think they would prefer something like cancer, something we have a chance at fighting rather than thinking it could be fatal and incurable.  To them it is like sitting around waiting for the ax to fall.

J – We have some very sophisticated equipment at the research lab.  Maybe we can help. Here’s my number at the university.  Give me a call.

K – That would be great.  I will tell them right away.  We were going by there tonight for moral support and maybe this will give them enough hope to get a good night’s sleep.  (Looks at watch) Oh!  We are going to be late getting there.  Sorry to run.  It was a wonderful coincidence meeting you like this.

J – Looking forward to it.

K – Now where is my wife (as he walks away)

Scene 5 (At the university research lab)

J – (To student/lab tech Angie) Don’t forget we have that little girl coming in tonight for tests.  We need to have a suitable place for her to go to sleep.  Preferably not in this maze of equipment looking like a horror/sci-fi movie.

A – I thought you liked all this macho looking equipment.  Makes you feel in charge, empowered.

J – I did until you made it sound like it was an awful look into the darkness of my soul.  Now I have to reevaluate my whole life.

A – Shouldn’t take long.  I’ll get a cup of coffee…

J – No time for that. (Makes the sound of a whip cracking).  They will be here in ten minutes.

A – Glad you gave me plenty of time.  The caffeine would only keep me awake as I was staring at the monitors all night.

J – I can almost hear you downing the coffee but the sound you make is glib, glib, glib not glub, glub, glub.

A – (rolls her eyes) I am going to get things ready now.

J – Bye

(Guard leads Mother and Father and Hannah into the door. J reaches out hand to shake)

J – Hi, I’m Doctor Wyatt but call me James.

F – Hello, I’m Tom Braddock and this is my wife, Susan.

M – Hello

M – And this is Hannah the singing wonder.

H – Mommy, I don’t sing I hum.

J – I hope you will hum for us tonight.  I am looking forward to a song from you.  Mind if I call you hummingbird?

H – (laughing) No.  I like hummingbirds.  Are you silly?

J – Sometimes.  My students have other names for me.  I can do silly though.

H – Most adults get silly when they talk to me but that’s ok.  It makes them feel more at ease.

J – Precocious huh? (Parents smile and nod) Ok, just in time here is Angie, (to Hannah) this is one of those mean, nasty students I was talking about but its ok because they’re only that way with professors.  They are exceptionally nice to hummingbirds.

A – Hummingbirds?

J – Yes hummingbirds.  Angie this is Mr. and Mrs. Braddock and their daughter Hannah who is now officially Hummingbird

M – Susan

F – Tom

A – Angie

J -James

H – Hannah

J – Ok enough of that.  We better get started before Hummingbird starts singing before we’re ready.

H – I told you I don’t sing, I hum.

J – I stand corrected.  Again (under his breath as he walks off) and again and again and again

A – (turning to H) Let me show you to your bed.  Do you sleep away from home much?

H – Not lately.  It scares my friends when I start humming.

A – Well, there is nothing to be afraid of.  The human body is an amazing thing.  There is still a lot we don’t know about it and maybe you can teach us a few things about it.  You know you are special in that way.

H – I’ve been told but I think mommy and daddy wished I wasn’t special in this way.

A – I’m sure they like all your special ways. Here is your room.  I will let your mother and Father get you ready and I will be back to wire you for sound.  We are going to make a record of you.

H – What’s a record.

A – Uh a recording for the whole world to listen to.  It will be played everywhere.

H – Why do grownups have to be so silly?

A – M – F (simultaneously) precocious

M – (as the parents are getting Hannah ready) You are not scared are you, Hannah?  We will be in the next room all night long.  We aren’t going anywhere.

H -No.  Not scared.

F – We will check in on you from time to time.  Besides all we need to do is follow the hum of the Hummingbird.

H – (Laughs) I like James.

M-F So do we

H – Angie too (as Angie walks in)

A – Angie too what?  What?

M-F Goodnight Hannah Love you.

H – Goodnight Love you.

A – Angie too what?

H – (Giggles.)

(Mother and father walk out as Angie readies the machines/electrodes/sensors)

(Mother and Father and Angie and James all in control room looking at Hannah.)

M – I wish I could be with her.

J – I wish you could too but the equipment is too sensitive.  We would have to buffer out the extra noise of your heart beating and gastro-intestinal noises that might drown out what we are looking for.  We want to calibrate just for Hannah.

M – Excuse me!!  (Acting offended – all laugh)

J – Sorry if I’m a little blunt.

A – A little!  It is amazing how blunt you are and how sharp you think you are.

J – Quiet student.  No one gave you permission to speak.

A – I don’t need permission to speak to someone who is beneath my intelligence…

J – Quiet, really, I think we are picking up something.  (Everybody is deathly silent for a minute or two)

A – No, just your ego getting out of hand.  (J ignores and is focused)

(After an hour and nothing parents are worried that it will not show up.)

M – I don’t know if I’m happy not to hear it or upset that there is no tone.

J – One thing research teaches you is to be patient.

(Quiet for a moment then)

A – Look at the readings doc.  They’re moving.

J – You’re right, no sound yet but there is activity.

A – I think we should adjust the levels.  We might overdrive at this sensitivity.

J – You’re right.  Follow them and make sure they stay within range.

M-F (together) that’s it, that’s the tone.  (Sound gradually increasing)

J – Are you tracking it Angie

A – I’m on it.  It has stabilized at about 20 dB

J – Great.  Let’s give it a minute and make sure there aren’t any fluctuations.

A – Right chief.

J – After we determine it is not changing start scanning to determine the location.

A – Right chief.

J – And quit calling me chief.

A – Right boss.  (James grits his teeth at Angie)

J – (to parents) this is going to take a couple of hours at least.  We are doing a micro can which means we are covering her whole body in tiny, tiny increments and even on a little girl it will take some time.  There is a lounge through that door and to the left.  Sorry the cafeteria is closed but you might find a grad student with some coffee.  They tend to keep late hours.

F – I think rest would be good.  Thanks.  Please keep us informed.  We will be in the lounge.

(As morning breaks James walks into the lounge where the parents are spread out sleeping.)

J – Mr. and Mrs. Braddock, Tom, Susan.  (They slowly get up) We are done with the scan.

M – Did you find anything.  Did you find out how to stop this and get back to normal.  (Pleading in her voice)

J – I hope that I did not give you the idea that it was going to be that simple.  This is probably the most unusual thing I have encountered next to quantum physics and there is no reference material to tell us where to start.  We are in uncharted territory as they say.  But we gathered a lot of data last night to evaluate and we have some of the brightest minds in the country at our disposal.  Our students are tenacious when you give them a new problem and Angie is up there with the best of them.  And this has really got her curiosity up.  You have a lot of reason to hope for a solution.  Please be patient a little longer.

F – We appreciate all that you’re doing and we will try.  Did you pinpoint where the tone was coming from?

J – No.  That was one of the strangest things.  It was almost like her whole body is a speaker.  The tone seems like it is coming from her whole body.  But where there is a speaker there has to be an amplifier.  We would like to go over the data and have her back.  Maybe the tone itself will lead us to the source.

M – Yes doctor uh James.  Let us know when you want us here and we will bring her back.

J – I believe Angie has her ready to go.  Angie has taken a real liking to Hummingbird.

M – I think the feeling is mutual.

M-F-J Goodbye

Scene 6 James’ Office

A – We have the results from Hummingbird.  Very interesting.  I think you should make this a priority.

J – That’s not up to me, that’s up to the people funding us.  They’re the people you should be calling boss.

A – Right chief.

J – Just stop (as he walks to the lab)

A – Right boss

They walk into the lab together and see a grad student (Ryan) sitting in front of a computer.

J – What you got?

R – Well we have a very complex harmonic wave for such a simple sounding tone.  You can see it up on the scope here.

J – That is strange.  Figured out why it is not sounding like it looks.

R – That was the big mystery but I believe we have the answer.  As you know all the frequencies, we use have a baseline which determines if that part of the frequency is negative or positive and as you also know, because you make so much more money than I do…

J – You aren’t getting paid for this.

R – That is true, so tell me again why I am doing this.

J – Because you want to graduate.

R – Right…    Oh well.  As you know it does not affect the harmonics of the frequency if you move the base line as long as it is still relative.  But in this case if you move the baseline up it changes the harmonics completely.

J – That can’t be right.

R – But it is.  Look at the wave here and when I move the baseline up to 7 percent of scale.

J – How can that be?

R – Don’t know that one but that’s not all.  It will change like this at more than one jump of the baseline.  It is almost like the quantum leap you see when light is expelled from an atom when the electrons change orbit.  I ain’t never seen nothin like it.

J – This is great.  Remind me to give you a raise.

R – Thanks chief (dryly).  That’s rubbing salt in the wound ain’t it?

J – Next step trying to combine all these harmonics and see if the whole is greater than the individuals.  This is like a 10-dimensional sound wave.  Do you think you can open up its secret and replicate it?

R – With a little help from Angie, I think we might have a chance.

J – How about it, Angie?  You got time for this in between your classes?

A – I have classes until noon but after that I can clear my schedule.   I will make time for Hummingbird.

R – Hummingbird?

A – I will tell you later.  Gotta run.

Scene 7 (Hannah comes back for another look.)

J – Thanks for bringing Hannah back.  By the way this is our sound guru Ryan.

M-F Hello Ryan, Susan and Tom

F – Did you find the source?  Do you know why this is happening?

J – Not yet but we are making real progress.  We, that is Ryan, has almost completed analyzing the tone.  We are hoping that will open a few doors for us.  What we are hoping for tonight is to pinpoint the source, the amplifier, so to speak.  We have added some equipment that will increase the sensitivity about 5000db.  (Turns to H) And how is our hummingbird tonight?  Are you ready to sing, (H pokes J in the leg with her toy) whoops, I mean hum?

H – If I can.  But I want a share of the royalties.

J – Royalties?  What royalties?

H – Daddy said that if my song got on the internet that I could get royalties from it.  What are royalties?

J – It is something that scientists never see and the people funding them get rich off of.

H – I don’t understand.

J – I don’t understand it either.  Ah, here is Angie right on time as usual.

A – That’s me, right on Angie.  Come on Hummingbird, we will get you ready for a nice night’s sleep.

H – Goodnight, Mommy, Daddy, Doctor Braddock.

J – James.

M – F We know the drill.  You know where we will be if you need us.

J – (nods)

(Everything is set up and H goes to sleep – tone starts)

J – Calibrate sensors (calibrated) Start scanning.  Start recording.  (Simultaneously from A and R) Right chief.

(All quiet for 1st 3 hours then suddenly the circuit boards receive a large surge and sparks fly from the instrument located in control room) (R jumps up from sleeping, A is shutting down, J jumps up)

J – What in the world, what just happened.

A – Looks like the circuits were overloaded.

J – Can you tell by how much?

A – Looks like about 500% over maximum loading.

J – Ryan, can you tell how much damage? (Ryan goes over to the panel and starts unbuttoning instrument enclosure – a few minutes of silence then)

R – Not too bad considering.  I placed a delay in the signal to allow us to shunt it in case this happens.  Looks like it only blew one board.  I can have it back up in a minute.

J – Thanks.  Angie be sure to lock on where and when the surge took place.

A – I think I have it but this is a little girl sleeping.  It is not like she doesn’t move at all.  What I have is my best guess.

J – It will have to do.

R – (finishes and slides the board into place and powers unit back up) Ready.

J – Alright let’s take this slow.  Lower the sensitivity to within range and scan over the area that the surge appears to be coming from.  (Angie begins scan again) (everybody is alternating watching H and the controls) (silence)

R – (wearing headphones) What was that?

J – A What was what.  I didn’t…

R – Listen, go back over the area you just passed only slightly deeper.

J – I hear something.  That sounded like a voice (V).  Maybe we are getting something from the next room or a radio frequency.  When was the last time you guys had the lab checked for sonic interference?

R – Yesterday.

J – Next time you hear it lock in on that position and don’t move the sensor.

A – I did but the source is moving.  Hannah appears to be still but the source is still moving.

R – That’s kinda creepy.

J – Can you track it.

A – It appears totally random in its movements.  We were fortunate to get it in the first place.  We are not only scanning Hummingbird’s width and height but the center of her body as well.  A 3-dimensional scan.

V – looking…

J – There it is again.  Follow it.

A – I’m trying.

V – Are you…

J – Keep trying

V – truth.

J – What is it saying?

V – Are you looking for the truth…

J – Is this some kind of joke?  Ryan run diagnostics check and then check for outside interference.  (Ryan staring at H) Now!

R – Right chief.   (a minute later) all things check out.  There is no possibility of interference.  Whatever that voice is, it is coming from Hummingbird.

A – (with a tear in her eye) This can’t be right.  This can’t be happening to such a sweet little girl.

J – Angie keep focused.  Try to find that signal again.  We must know if there is more.

(They continue trying with no more success)

A – We’ve been going over this for 2 hours and all we get is fragments but they all add up to the same message.  Are you looking for the truth?  And…

J – What else?

A – Well we think that the source is not moving after all.  What appears to be happening is the instruments are so sensitive that the fluctuations in Hummingbird’s body, food, blood flow, even her growth affect where her center of mass is, and that is where the source is.  You might say it is in the center of her being.

J – Strange….

J – I think we have exhausted the information we are going to get from that voice.  Continue the scan on the rest of her in case there is something else.

A – Like that’s not enough?

J – We need to be thorough.

(After scan is done and they shut off the equipment, they all stand around staring at each other speechless.  finally, Angie breaks the silence)

A – What are you going to tell Hannah’s parents.

J – I don’t know.  I do know that if it, whatever it is, is trying to communicate to us, it is listening like we are.  It is looking for an answer before it continues to the next step.

A – Well you can’t tell Hannah’s parents that there is something inside their little girl that is trying to start up a conversation with anyone passing by with a $500,000 scanner.

J – Yes, yes, you’re right.  It makes it sound like there is something living inside of her trying to get out.

R – That was one of the questions in my mind.  Who or what is this?

J – Until we can answer that the only thing that we can tell Hannah’s parents is that we have the data we need for now and as soon as we finish analyzing it, we should have some answers.

R – I think analyzing the data will give us more questions than answers.

J – That is true, but we need to give them some hope.  For now, I guess we should start “looking for the truth”.  One thing is sure, the question could not be more universal and relevant.  Scientist or not, everybody should have an interest in the truth.

(Scene fades)

Scene 8 A few days later

(Ryan comes busting into James’s office – Angie is sitting there)

R – Hey boss, guess what I found? (Ryan breathless and excited)

J – Your paper on atomic structure that your dog ate.

R – Better than that.  I found a research paper on acoustical anomalies in the human body.

A – Gross.  Why are men so infatuated with flatulence?  (Makes a face – James laughs)

R – No, no, you don’t understand.  This is about a couple of guys doing some research and detected a tone in the body of a young child.

J – (rises from his desk) You’re kidding.

R – Nope. (Hands J the paper) Spells it out right there.  And it appears we are on the right track.  They found the source in the center of mass of the child’s body.

A – That is where we found the voice.

R – And there is more.  It says they had a conversation with the voice within.  Seems it was calling out to them as well with the same message.  Does this mean I can start getting paid?

J – Start turning in your papers on time and we’ll see.

A – (Looking over the shoulder of J) Are the researchers anyone we know?  Do they seem like viable sources?

J – With all the similarities I don’t think we need to be as concerned with the sources as much as the information.  It appears that they are not revealing how they achieved the center of mass to transmit or receive information.  We might have to figure that out for ourselves if they won’t divulge their secrets.  Ryan, have you looked these guys up yet?

R – No, just found this.

J – By the way where did you find this.

R – I was looking in the biology section.  I am doing a paper on different pressures found in the intestinal system under various conditions for my biology class.

J – A (together) Flatulence!

R – (blushes) I’m going to be late for class.  You know how anal these professors are around here.  Unforgiving and rigid.  Just like a lump of coal.  Later.

J – Right, right.  Angie, can you look these guys up and get a little background on them.  I’ll go see them as soon as it can be arranged.  Looks like a Dr.  Edwards and a Dr. Sinclair.  Both from UVA.

A – I should have something for you by the time your next class is over.

J – Thanks, I will see you later.

(After class – in hall way walking back to office)

A – Here is a short bio on each.  Looks like this Sinclair has dropped off the grid.  Edwards on the other hand has taken up a prestigious position in Princeton.  I can get you a flight in the morning.  You don’t have classes tomorrow.

J – No thanks, I think I’ll drive.  It is only about 4 hours and it will give me time to think.   And could you keep searching for Sinclair?

A – No problem.  Thinking while driving?  Don’t you have trouble driving and chewing gum at the same time?

J – What would I do if I didn’t have you to keep my ego in check?  Anyway, sometimes I can get order from the chaos of the traffic.  Ying and Yang don’t you know.

A – No and I don’t think I want to.

J – What about getting an appointment with this Dr. Edwards?

A – Already done.  I made it for 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.  I thought you might want to get right on this. I will see you Wednesday.

J – Great.  You know me too well.   (pause) Going somewhere?

A – No just have people to meet and plans to make.  You might not know it but I do have a life that I am responsible for.  It’s not going in the direction I want it to unless I take hold of it.

J – Well good luck.  Let me know if you need any references.  Happy to help out one of the brightest students on campus.

A – (under her breath) Not one of, THE brightest.

A – Thanks but got it covered.  Bye

Scene 9 (Orchestrated?)

(Friday morning early, J on way to see Dr E., lost in thought and distracted pulls up to a red light that is on a small hill, looking at paperwork from research inadvertently releases brake and car slowly backs up into the one behind it as the car lays on its horn, J looks up to see the driver in mirror looking perplexed, J motions the driver to pull into a parking lot behind him, both get out of the car)

J – So, so sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking.

Other Driver (D) – Well I hope it wasn’t this.  That would make it intentional.

J – No, just, my mind has been consumed by a problem at work and I guess I got distracted.

D – No problem.  I don’t think it did any damage.

J – Well, I would feel better if we could exchange information

D – It looks fine to me.

J – Yes but if you find something got knocked loose or started to not work, I would feel bad that I caused you the trouble.

D – But you wouldn’t know.

J – True but this way I would be sure that nothing bad came of it.

D – OK.

(They both pull out wallets and insurance cards and start writing down info, J stops writing and asks)

J – You would not be interested in the acoustical sciences, would you?

D – Strange question under the circumstances but yes, I used to be a researcher at UVA.  Acoustical holography.   Why.

J – You might not believe this but I have been looking for you.  I am a researcher at the university studying a subject that is very similar to the project you did with Dr Edwards a number of years ago.

C – (Looks at J drivers license and says to himself) I might have known.

C – Oh yes, with Dr. Edwards.  Have you seen him yet?

J – No, I’m on my way there now.

C – Well we need to wrap this up.  Dr. Edwards does not like to be kept waiting.  He will have your hide.

J – Can I call you and talk to you about your research, your findings, the voice.

C – (Smiles) I don’t think I could keep you away.  Call me sometime and you can come over.  I am afraid I do not have a professional environment to greet you, just my home.  Oh, and it would be best for you if you did not mention my name to Dr. Edwards.  We did not part on the best of terms.

J – I will remember that.  I noticed that you did not use his first name when talking about him.

C – That?  Never did.  He is a bit stuck on formality.  Come to think of it we were never close on any level but the science and when we parted ways on that there was no common ground.  By the way, if you are looking for the method to determine body mass in real time on a living, growing being such as a little girl, I cannot supply that.  Dr. Edwards came up with that method and I’m afraid he is not sharing that with anyone.  As far as I can tell he no longer has that information anymore.

J – I will keep that in mind.  (Pause as he gets into car) Dr Sinclair, just one more thing.

C – Charles

J – Charles.  You seemed mildly surprised at meeting like this.  Most people would think this is a one in a million chance to bump into each other this way, no pun intended.

C – Well, I was kind of expecting something like it.  Maybe not exactly this but somehow, we would get together.

J – But how? Why?

C – let’s just say a little voice whispered in my ear. (Gets in car and leaves)

Scene 10 Meeting (with one of the original researchers Dr. Edwards)

(James is rushing across campus of a prestigious university.  Looking frantically for the office of the researcher, Dr Edwards.  Asks a few people who rush by and ignore him.  Finally runs up the steps and dashes by the secretary of Dr Edwards and says which office?  She replies 5th on right.  He sticks his head in a few wrong doors and finally opens up to see Dr. Edwards busy at his desk.)

J – (pops his head inside the door) Dr. Edwards?

E – This is not starting well.  You don’t knock.  If you were one of my students you would be suspended from class for a week.

J – Very sorry, I was having a hard time finding your office and everyone was in such a rush they wouldn’t give me any help.  That’s why I’m late.

E – (Looking at watch) So you are. That’s two weeks suspension.

J – (Laughs nervously)

E – Make an appointment with my secretary sometime after two weeks.

J – (laughs a little less and shows even more nervousness) Seriously?

E – (looking over his glasses) I do not joke.

J – Yes, I can see that now.   A little girl may have need of some of the answers you can provide.  I’m sorry sir but this is very important.

E – So is being on time.  If it was that urgent your actions would have reflected it.

J – It is about your research that you did with Dr Charles Sinclair.  I have duplicated it and confirmed communication which comes from the center of mass of the body of my subject.

E – (Sets paperwork down – very agitated) Shut the door behind you as you leave and forget about making an appointment in two weeks or anytime for that matter.

J – Just a minute of your time, sir.  I am going to see Dr Sinclair next week and I want to have the whole picture of your research together.

E – (very stern – on edge) You have five minutes.  Shut the door.

J – (shuts the door and sits down)

E – (as J is sitting) How did you find out about our research?

J – A research assistant found your paper on aural communication anomalies in the campus library.  Just by accident.  It was filed under the wrong section.

E – (under his breath) I thought they had all been burned.  (Turns to J) I don’t know what you think you found but the noise that we found was not coming from the subject.  It was generated by the machine Charles built.  We were wrong.

J – But that’s impossible.  What you have described was exactly what we have duplicated.  We have documented conversations with a being beyond anything that mankind has ever encountered.  The technology required to communicate as it has is tremendous.

E – I suggest you check your colleagues.  That is probably the source.  I don’t know what kind of voices you have heard but Charles was the source of the voices in our research.  He fabricated them and duped me into believing they were real and if you’re not careful he will draw you into his delusion as well.

J – But the answers were identical and the positioning of the signal was identical.  Even the harmonics of the tone were identical.

E – (Stands to his feet and raises his voice) I’m telling you it was Charles Sinclair that fabricated the voice and if it had not been for some very forgiving people providing me a way out of this mess and allowing me to recant by signing a retraction, my career would have been ruined like Charles’.   The only voice you have been hearing is one that is in your head.  You are insane.  Now get out of my office and never come back.

J – But…

E – Get out NOW!

(J slowly leaves office under the glaring eye of Dr E.  He walks slowly down the hall when he passes Dr E secretary.  She asks J with a sheepish grin) How did it go?

J – I think I have been expelled.

Scene 11 (Putting our heads together.)

(J returns from meeting with Dr E., J & A &R sitting in lab discussing events)

J – (to Angie) How did things go with your meetings.

A – My future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades (smiles – wearing shades)

R – (to J) How about your boss?  Pick up any clues to this puzzle?

J – Well, I struck out with Dr. Edwards.  I didn’t even find out his first name.  He was death on Dr. Sinclair though.  Said that everything they did was a fraud perpetrated by Dr. Sinclair.  Blamed everything on him and said it was all nonsense and he didn’t want anything to do with it.  Would not even discuss the science, just the ramifications to his career.

A – Well, you can see what this would look like to mainstream science.  You would have a hard time making anyone believe anything we have appeared to have seen or heard.

R – I guess that voice is right then Are You Looking for The Truth.

A – Maybe we should back off a little.  There is a high probability that Hannah will grow out of this.  I mean, it is not like you hear about this all the time.  Even the kid in the original experiments, the tone went away for some reason.

J – But aren’t you curious.

A – Yes but I would not want to put that little girl through more than she has been.

J – Well, we can’t stop now.  This is getting too weird not to pursue it and weird makes me very curious.

A – Weird?  Weird how?

J -Weird bad like I am in a spook show and I am about to be the next victim.  This is too crazy to drop now.  And by the way Angie, you can stop looking for Charles Sinclair.  I found him, or he found me, or something in between, I don’t know.  Anyway, I have his contact information somehow though I’m not sure how.  I not sure what it means.

R – You are getting weirded out.  What does it mean when you say what does it mean?

A – (to Ryan) Moron.  There is no such word as weirded.  (To J) You need to make a little more sense.  What happened?

J – I was on my way to see Dr Edwards and wasn’t paying any attention when I backed into Dr. Sinclair.

R – You were driving down the street and you backed into Dr Sinclair.  Were you driving backwards down the street?

J – No, no, no.   I was at a red light; the car was on a hill and I let it roll backwards into Dr Sinclair’s car.

A – Really.  I looked all over for him and you just drive a few blocks and bam, there he is.  I guess it is true that it is better to be lucky than to be good.  By the way I hope nobody got hurt.

J – No.  It didn’t even scratch either car but it was the strangest coincidence.  Like I said, spooky.

A – Like I said, it wouldn’t hurt to take some time and re-evaluate.

J – Not on your life.  But the strangest thing was that he was barely surprised at all that we bumped into each other.

A – Maybe he followed you and planned it.

J – Couldn’t be.  I backed into him.  He could not have orchestrated this.  He said he should have been expecting it to happen and then he said…

R – What?

J – When I asked him why he was not more surprised by all this he said that a little voice told him it would happen.

R – Watch yourself boss.  (Making ghostly noises)

J – Funny.  The one solid piece of information I got was that Dr Edwards was the only one who knew how to find the center of mass to communicate with this voice, and it seems he was so disgruntled and disenchanted that he no longer has the plans for the device to communicate.

A – Bummer.

J – That is the next step then.  I would like to have a little more information before I go see Dr Sinclair.  He seems to be the type of person who holds all the cards and I don’t like being in that position.  I want to know more about what this voice is and wants.  Maybe if I can have something of value to him, he might be more willing to divulge his secrets as well.

We need to build a device that will let us find, and maintain a focus on the center of the anomaly.

A – Build a device that can calculate the center of mass of a child in real time that is sleeping and moves throughout the night, take in the chemical movement such as blood flow, digestive machinery, breathing, and maintain that to within a few nanometers.  Easy enough.  We should be able to do that before lunch.  The only question is what are we going to do after lunch.  Maybe create a perpetual motion machine?

J – I thought that would be simple for the brightest student on campus.  (Turns to Angie) You thought I didn’t hear that did you?

A – I only said what you already know.  I am afraid I can’t put a lot of time into this.  Those people that I have been meeting are getting more demanding but I will help when I can.

R – I think I have a possible solution.  I got a friend in the physics lab that has been experimenting with a machine that simulates gravity.  If we can produce a three-dimensional gravity field and measure the mass on all three axis that might work.

J – Yes. it probably would but you would have to measure in free space and not be dependent on a resisting force.

A – Don’t forget that we are talking about a little girl here.  You aren’t putting a monkey in space.

J – Noted. (To Ryan) That might work if we can create something that is not intrusive.

A – Or scary.

J – Or scary.

R – Or scary.

R – I will try to get it going as soon as possible.  Money?

J – I can shuffle some funds.

R – Some big cards you’re going to have to shuffle.

A – What kind of game you guys playing anyway.

J – I think this will be hide and seek,

(Later that day)

R – (sees James in the hallway – running to catch up) Boss, Boss,

J – Ryan.  How is the communicator going?

R – Sorry the, gravity simulators are not what my buddy said they were.  They were mostly for modeling and not for real world.  And on top of that there was no way to use them in free space.  That would put Hummingbird in what would feel like a coffin.

J – Bad news. And we need some good news.

R – There is some good news.

J – Always, always start with the good news.

R – I went over the research paper of Edwards and Sinclair and…

J – And…

R – I don’t think that Edwards meant to but I believe he left the key in the door.

J – What door?

R – Edwards made an offhand remark about the tone, the part about the 10 frequencies, that implies that they are the key to finding the center of the tone.  All I have to do is find the equivalent number that matches the quanta of that harmonic wave.  It has a definite correlation in that It has to move slowly whenever Hummingbird is very still and very rapidly whenever she is restless.  Then all we have to do is find the starting reference for the coordinates. I have the data on her movement versus the frequency.  If all goes well, I should have it in a few days.

J – Brilliant!  As soon as Angie gets her new position, you can start getting paid.

R – What.  She won’t be leaving for another two years.

J – And as soon as she does, you are in my man!

R – (walks away grumbling)

Scene 12 (the tone of the conversation.)

(Ryan and James in the lab, everything is set up, all the instruments, equipment, computers)

R – Looks like we are good to go.  Ain’t this a gas.

A – Watch it.  You know you have a reputation now.

R – I need a way to check the calibration process.  It won’t be exactly the same because Hummingbird will be moving in her sleep but it will give us a place to start.

J – Alright, I’ll volunteer. (Jumps up on the table and lies down)

R – (pecking on computer) to your left, ok up a little.  Good now hold still.

J – If I went to sleep it would be more realistic.

R – Don’t go to sleep and don’t talk.  I don’t want any movement.  (pause) calibrating…  (then) whoa, this is crazy, you ain’t gonna believe this.

J – What?

R – Hush, don’t talk.  Listen to this Angie. (Hands her the headphones)

A – Is it the same frequency?  The same multi-dimensional harmonic wave?

R – Yep

J – Somebody talk to me.  Whoever is in charge talk to me.

A – Oh, that would be me and you have been officially dubbed Hummingbird II.

J – Make sense people.  Talk to me.

R – When we started calibrating for a very low dB, ultra-low that is, we picked up that same tone.  Lay still.  I think I can feed the tone into the computer and pick up the center of mass for you.  If this works, we should be able to hear what the voice in Hannah was trying to tell us.  Wait a minute (everybody silent and tense)

R – (Ryan to J) the more still you are the better this will work.

J – (softly) trying…

R – Got it.  I am putting it on speaker very low so we have to be quiet to hear.  The vibration from the speaker can change things at this sensitivity.

V – Are you looking for the truth?  (Pause 7 seconds and then repeats)

(All are startled and amazed)

J – Are we set up to send as well as receive?

R – Anytime.  There might be a delay as the computer recalculates where the center of mass will be just before it sends it.

J – Who are you?

V – We must start from the beginning.

J – Who are you?

V – We must start from the beginning.

J – What is your purpose?

V – The same as all viable beings.

J – Is there more than one of you?

V – I am one.

J – Are you alone.

V – I have never been alone.

J – Where are you?

V – (Silence)

J – Where are you?

V -(Silence)

J – Do you live in another solar system?

V – (Silence)

J – Is the number PI infinite?

V – (Silence)

J – Who are you?

V – We must start from the beginning.

(After a couple of hours of asking various scientific question with no response they stop)

R – I must say, it is consistent.

J – I am not totally sure this is intelligence as we know it.  I don’t know if it can’t answer the questions because it is not capable of it, maybe not in its program, or it is just being obstinate.

A – Either way is very, very frustrating.

J – Yes.  It takes patience to be a scientist.  Did I ever mention that in any of my lectures?

A – R No.

J -Well remind me to sometime.  We have made some real progress today folks.

A – Still nothing to tell Hummingbird’s parents though.

J – And I should call them, soon as I get up the nerve.  Anyone of you guys want to work on your bedside manner.

A – Not me, I’ll see you Tuesday.

J – Off again?  I hope this works out for you.  Ryan is chomping at the bit for your position.

A – If this works out, I might hire him to clean my pool.  Both of them.

R – It has got to pay better than this.

R – J – A Goodnight.

J – Oh by the way, no lab tomorrow, I am going to see Charles Sinclair.  Maybe he is a little more buddy, buddy with this voice.

Scene 13 (Meeting with Scientist (Charles Sinclair) who studied tone before)

(James drives up to house.  Walks up to door and knocks.  Wife greets James.)

L – Won’t you please come in.  You must be James, I am Laura.  Charles’s wife.

J – Thank you.  You have a lovely home.

L – We think it is comfortable.  Charles is out back.

J – (notices home is decorated with religious sayings, makes a strange face)

L – Reality not only takes you to new places but in places others have already been.  It would be arrogance to totally

discount all that have gone before.

J – I guess so (Shrugs his shoulders)

L – Would you like something to drink?  Tea or coffee?

J – Tea would be great.

L – We have some on the patio.  Help yourself. Charles, James is here.

C – Hello James, good to see you again. (Stands and extends his hand to shake)

J – Thank you, good to see you.  I hope our first meeting did not put you off too much.

L – I will leave you two alone.

C – Thank you dear.

C – No.  I have come to expect the unexpected in a way.  But that is a philosophy I suspect you are starting to adopt.

J – Yes.  Your wife seems to be a bit of a philosopher too.

C – More than a bit.  She studied philosophy at Cambridge and taught at Princeton until…

J – Well, I’m glad I did not pursue that conversation.  She probably could have made me look like a freshman in high school.

C – You and me both.  She could have but she wouldn’t have.  Her’s is a very practical philosophy; you might say she believes heart before the head.

J – And you?

C – I’m the other side of the coin.  But she does give me a great deal of insight that I can’t seem to provide.

J – (Nods his head in affirmation) I have a student like that.

C – So you have more questions than I have answers, I’m sure.  I’ve been keeping an eye on your research ever since Hannah, or should I say Hummingbird, came to you.

J – How could you?  We have been working under tight security ever since we detected this anomaly?

C – Still calling it an anomaly?  Then I’m positive you have a lot of questions.  You have been carrying on conversations with this ‘anomaly’?

J – Yes but all my questions are met with cryptic answers.  I feel like I am talking to an old geezer that’s playing with my mind.

C – Old yes, geezer no.  And he is playing with your mind but it’s a game we make him play.

J – You act like you know him intimately.  Exactly what level did you get to with this being.

C – You tried to create a machine to determine the center of mass using simulated gravity but it didn’t work out.  Then you found an equation to convert the tone into coordinates?

J – How did you know that?

C – We will get to that.  Is this not true?

J – Yes… (hesitates)

C – If you want me to be open and honest with you, you must be with me as well. This is the only way you will understand.  This voice is uncompromising and requires an open and honest communication.  That is why he communicates the way he does.

J – Then why does it disguise itself behind a complex tone that takes a 1/2-million-dollar machine to carry on a simple conversation?

C – He is not disguised.  As a matter of fact, it doesn’t take a machine to hear him.

J – What does that mean?

C – In due time.  We must start from the beginning.

J – (a little stunned) You are starting to sound like it.

C – What questions did you ask that you are having trouble with the answer?

J – Just about all of them.

C – Start with one.

J – Hmm let’s see.  Are you in this dimension or another?

C – His answer

J – What would a dimension be if you do not see with eyes?

C – Tell me another.

J – Are their many of your kind or are you alone?

C – And…

J – I am one but I am never alone.

C – I think I can see where this is going but let’s try one more.

J – Are you available to communicate in other ways than this?

C – (waiting)

J – It said     There are no limitations I have imposed on any being.

C – Yes, I can see the problem but it is not with the answers but with the questions.  But then again that is where I started as well.

J – (seems irritated and offended) What does it expect?

C – He expects nothing but hopes for everything.

J – You are not helping, not even a little.  Maybe I should leave.

C – There are real answers to real questions but you are talking to a being that has no limits but the ones you place on him.  If your impatience creates demands that limit you that in turn limits him.

J – Then what is the answer? (impatiently)

C – You are asking questions like most people would, but…

J – Yes…

C – But the questions are equivalent to asking if there is such a thing as a square circle or what color is the taste of sweetness.  It is nonsensical to him.  Let’s start with a few questions that are relevant.

J – For instance.

C – What is your relationship to mankind.  By the way I got this from my wife.

J – And you asked this question?

C – Yes.

J – And what did it say?

C – What is beyond love?

J – Another riddle.

C – A direction.  All his answers are designed to lead in a direction.  He can only stoop so low to us so he is trying to lead us to the point that we can understand him.

J – So how did you get a direction out of this?

C – What is greater than love? Love is our term and we have used it to death.  We have used it to the point it almost has no meaning.  Yet it is still the highest ideal we have.  In its most elevated sense, as humanity uses it, it transcends all our needs so we may think of other’s needs.  So, what is greater than this ideal?  It is the realization of this and more, in its purest form it is more that our greatest feeling of love.  It is, to the best we can understand, the intent from which all actions produce the greatest good possible under those circumstances.  This, unlike our tainted idea of self-sacrificing, goes beyond to consider the greatest good whether it is the good of the one sacrificing or the good of the one being sacrificed for.  It is totally objective with one goal in mind, to do the greatest good.  This is the intent of his relationship with mankind.  This is the direction for our understanding.  This is the foundation on which we are to build.

J – All that from what is beyond love.

C – I had to change the way I was thinking about a lot of things to get that and ask a lot of questions and ask a lot of wrong questions before I could get to the right ones, but yes.

J – So if I asked how did humanity evolve could it answer that?

C – Still the wrong question.  You are thinking like a scientist trying to get scientific answers.  It is not that he can’t answer those questions or doesn’t want to, it’s the thing that if he answers all the trivial questions, you will think he agrees with you that the trivial is the important thing.  Think about the major questions of life.

J – Like who am I?

C – The importance of that question depends on how important you are.  If you were the only person alive that would be important but under the circumstances…

J – How about does mankind have a purpose?

C – Now you’re getting the idea.

J – Was this one you asked?

C – Yes.

J – And what did he say?

C – You can see the evil clearly but look to the potential.  It is beyond comprehension.

J – And the direction this gives?

C – Follow what is to what can be.  If you understand the potential, you can understand the purpose.  It also provides insight into our relationship with him.

J – Is there nothing simple about this?

C – Yes, actually it gets a lot simpler once you have the right mindset but that doesn’t mean it gets any easier.  Not the same thing as you well know.  It can get frustratingly hard at times.  If you pursue this it will be a shock to your whole being.  It is not unlike the shock therapy that people used in old mental health facilities to bring people back to reality.

J – Reality.  What is reality?

C – You remind me of a noted person in history the way you said that.  I hope you make better choices than he did.

J – What?

C – Forget it.  There are a few things that we need to cover before it is too late… of vital importance…

J – Such as…

C – You have found that he goes silent sometimes.

J – Yes.

C – It is not that he does not want to answer but is waiting on a question he can answer.  Some answers are dependent upon your ability to understand and accept.  So, a question that he cannot answer now may be one that he can when your understanding deepens.

J – I feel like you are trying to be my professor and you want me to be your student (said with a sense of distrust)

C – Well, you are a student here as we already mentioned.  The being you are talking to can only give you answers you are knowledgeable enough to comprehend, no more, no less, and I think I can safely say he has all the answers.  Everything from the physical to the meta physical.  From the randomness of quantum physics to why a person can appreciate the innocence of a child.  The only limitation is in you.  You must not only understand precisely what you are asking, but the importance of the question.  And this is paramount, the most vital thing of all, the most critical component, you must have trust in his answers.  You must believe what he says, everything form the tiniest inuendo to the most audacious claim.

J – Now you’re going too far.  How can I believe like that?  That’s asking too much.

C – Is it?

J – Yes.  Any sane person would not accept that.

C – If that is true then you need to stop and evaluate what sanity is.

J – You’re asking me to put blinders on.  That’s not scientific.

C – I’m not asking you to do anything.  You came to me for answers.  I’m giving you only what I know to be true and I know that if you can’t trust him in the little things, you can’t trust him in anything.  You took quantum mechanics in your final year at MIT…

J – I’m beginning to think that this tone is not the only being that knows everything.  Yes, yes, I did.

C – When they told you an electron can appear to be at two places at the same time what was your reaction?

J – I thought that it was insane.

C – But you believed them?

J – Yes but the greatest minds on the planet confirmed this.

C – And could any of those minds create such a marvelous way to communicate as the portal you discovered?

J – Maybe given enough time.

C – Snakes!!  (frustrated)

J – Where?

C – No, no, not here.  (Pauses as he collects himself) You remind me of a group of people in history who discounted the works of a highly intelligent being as long as they thought they could do something equal or close.  In this case creating a snake from a stick to support their unbelief.  The question is could those great minds you refer to, can they currently accomplish this portal.

J – (sheepishly) No

C – But yet you trust them.  You have a much greater reason to trust this being talking to you through this tone than you have of any of the great minds.

J – But they don’t require unconditional trust.

C – Don’t they?  Isn’t it true that their philosophical views, not their scientific views mind you, rule modern thought?

J – Such as?

C – Such as evolution?

J – You can’t honestly question evolution?

C – More to the point, have you?

J – What? Of course I have.

C – In what ways?

J – I have read about it as most of my colleagues have.

C – Not the same thing as questioning.

J – Okay.  I pondered over some of the statements.

C – Still not there.

J – I listened to the crack pots that say evolution is not true which by the way, and no offense, you appear to be one of them.

C – None taken.  But still there is no questioning of evolution in what you said and more importantly in your tone.  I never said that evolution was wrong or even implied it was.  My thought was, have you ever seriously questioned it?  And 3 strikes, you’re out.  Even Darwin said if it was found that the cell of any animal or plant was not very simple then my theory would disintegrate.  Knowing what we know about the cell, if Darwin was alive today, he would not believe his own theory.  But you’ve accepted it and I daresay that it is because of these great minds you refer to and their philosophies without ever digging into it for yourself.  And I would not be surprised if these great minds didn’t do any digging either.  It just fit the worldview they wanted to create.  It fit the reality of the world they wanted and not the world that is.

J – Are you saying I can’t trust them?

C – I am saying that you can’t trust the way you pick your resources to trust.  The reason I believe this voice unconditionally is because every time I have believed what he said it has not only turned out true but elevated my level of understanding so I could take the next step.  And more than that, his whole nature appears to be about the truth.

J – Isn’t the truth relative?

C – That is a dark question that only leads into more darkness.  If the truth has no real importance or is only relative to you, you have put no value on it and if you think it is of no value, why bother with anything.  At that point our whole existence and anything else for that matter, is irrelevant.

J – Are we leaving science to go into philosophy?

C – Yes and no.

J – More yes than no.

C – What is science but the search for the truth?  What is truth but reality?  As a scientist you want to know the truth, as a philosopher you want to know the truth.  But as a member of humanity, you want to know something that appears to add value to your life.  If this human side is the main criteria, then what you deem valuable changes constantly so that it has little regard for reality or the truth.  Truth then becomes relative whether you are a scientist or a philosopher. When we talk of anything that you are willing to accept without really searching and knowing the truth for yourself. then you are accepting the humanity part of this equation and to you, truth is relative.  If you are purely scientific or a pure philosopher then you want the pure truth and do not take other’s opinions for truth.  You find out for yourself or remain unopinionated.  I have never seen a scientist or philosopher that wasn’t opinionated and did not believe his or her pure intellectual ability wasn’t enough to override their ignorance.  As I was saying about the snakes, as long as they believe they can come up with the answer, not actually have the answer, but in their minds think they can, to them it is the same as having that answer right now.  Arrogance!  And that allows you to trust in the convenient things because they are convenient.  This voice is asking you to trust in the things that appear inconvenient because it is the truth.

J – Are you looking for the truth.  (refers to voice)

C – Exactly.  Not riches, not glory, not a way to pump up your ego, not an easy way out.  Just pure truth.  That is the question then, are you?

J – (hesitates) Yes, I am enough of a pure scientist to have an appreciation of the truth.  So, yes.  But I have a feeling that I will lose something that I have been holding very dear to me if I travel this road.

C – Yes you will.  There is some part of you that resists the truth, that has made life easier to deal with.  But it has also blinded you.  You will have to give it up.

J – And what is that.

C – You will know it when you see it. (long pause as J gets up and walks around a little and stares into the distance)

C – There is one more thing and then you must go. (pause) Things are not what you think they are.  You do not have much time.  A week maybe a little more.

J – What are you talking about?

C – Not everyone around you is who you think they are.

J – What?

C – What you are about to encounter is what every person who ever tried to find the truth encounters.   Someone who is trying to keep the truth from coming to light. They have been watching you from the first time you met Hannah.  They do not want this truth to get out.

J – Why what harm could I or my assistants possibly do to anyone?  Or what harm could the truth do for that matter?  It has no consequence on anything.

C – You are very wrong there and if you will keep going down this road it will become evident.  There is a reason that we are talking in my back yard of a modest home instead of the large home I used to have and instead of an office at some research center.  They blacklisted me and my wife as well, and the decisions that you make in the next few days will determine if you suffer the same fate.

J – I still don’t understand why.  I am not hurting anyone.

C – No but you have great potential to hurt these people and they know it.  They are devious and shrewd and have much more resources than you and I have on hand.  You can strip them of everything they have and they know it.  So be careful but above all make the truth the priority.

J – Thank you for your time.  It has given me a lot to think about.  Can I come back again sometime?

C – That would not be wise.  You have already reduced your time considerably by talking to me.  But call if you need and we will assess and see what is the best thing to do.  If you lose my number, I’m in the book.

J – Thanks again, I think I know the way.

C – (says to himself when J is gone) Yes you do.  And I sincerely hope you take it.

Scene 14 (Phone call from M-F to J)

J – Hello this is Dr Wyatt.

M – Hello this is Susan Braddock, Hannah’s mother.

J – Yes how is our little Hummingbird.  I hope she’s alright.  Nothing has changed has it.

M – No and that is the problem nothing has changed.  I hoped that you would be able to give us some idea when this tone is going to stop.

J – I’m sorry I can’t give you anything new to go on.  I assure you we are working very hard on this.  It is our top priority.

M – Well, the thing about it is, when Hannah takes a nap at day care it scares the other children and to be quite frank, I think they get that fear from their teachers.  Nobody understands it so everybody is afraid of it.  Hannah has had to go to 4 different day cares because of this.

J – I am so sorry.   People can be cruel without even knowing it.

M – Yes, they can.  It is putting a real strain on our whole family and frankly Dr. we are starting to come to the end of our rope.

J – I wish I could give you more.  We are making progress but haven’t got to the point we understand how to stop it.  We have found other cases though rare.  The one thing that I can say is that everyone who has this seems to grow out of it.  There are no cases of damage to the child or any lasting effects and there are no known cases of anyone having it past 10-year-old.

M – I honestly don’t think we can handle another 5 years of this.

J – I am so sorry.  If there is any change let me know and if we find something on our end, we will let you know right away.

M – Please do and Dr.

J – Yes Mrs. Braddock

M – Please hurry.

J – We will do our best.

Scene 15 (Finding the truth)

(Ryan busy setting up for a session, Angie looking worried)

J – (to Ryan) Do you have the speech to text set up so I can ask the questions verbally?

R – All ready.  When you want to start just press this button.  Pressing it again will stop.  Pressing this button will key a microphone.  All set but it won’t be recording.

J – Thanks.  I don’t want this recorded.

A – I want to be in there with you.

J – Sorry, this thing is turning personal and I need to keep some objective minds around me.  I will be alright.  Charles gave me some direction.  I think I know what and how the questions might go but I need to be able to address them without any inhibitions.  Free from any distractions.

A – You’ve been working too hard on this.  Are you sure that you are able to do this?

J – As able as I’ll ever be.  You guys lock the door behind you, will ya?

(Angie and Ryan leave the room)

J – (to himself) Don’t know where this is going to take me but I won’t know if I don’t try.  Besides, it’s the truth, how hard can that be on you?  (small gulp as he presses the start button)

V – Are you looking for the truth?

J – As a matter of fact I do.  Glad you asked.

V – (Silence)

J – Do you have a philosophy?

V – (Silence)

J – Where does your consciousness live?

V – (Silence)

J – Who are you?

V – We must start from the beginning.

J – Is mankind going to survive?

V – Not without me.

J – Is this by your choice?

V – I cannot change reality.  It all has its purpose.

J – Are you more associated with one religion than another?

V – Religions are mankind’s inventions.  Reality is my invention.

J – Is there reality in religion?

V – Reality is not a philosophy.

J – Are you associated with any religion?

V – Religions are mankind’s inventions.  Reality is my invention.

J – What is reality?

V – You are talking to it.  I am the closest you will ever get to reality.

J – Is love real?

V – Mine is.

J – Do you believe in love.

V – Not as you do.

J – What is the difference?

V – I am love.

J – Do you love me?

V – Deeply.  As I do all and everything.

J – You love everybody?

V – I can do nothing else.

J – You love the worst person in the world?

V – I can do nothing else.

J – What would you do to show me this love?

V – I would die for you.

J – Who are you?

V – I am Jesus.

(James starts sobbing almost uncontrollably.)

J – Can you forgive me for doubting you?

V – I have always been ready.  We can both forgive you and you can be whole again.

J – Thank you.

V – Welcome back to reality.

J – Thank you, thank you, praise you.

Scene 16 (The hammer falls)

(Senator (S) and aid (A) talking about James’ research, walking down the hall of the capitol building)

A – And the president knows all about this.

S – This is a party matter and yes, he is always aware of every party decision.  He has to approve them.

A – And he is alright with removing funding and shutting down this Hummingbird research at (looks at folder) the university of Pennsylvania?

S – It was his idea.

A – I don’t understand, Senator, what has this Hummingbird research have to do with us or anything in the government for that matter.

S – If you control what the people believe you control what they think and if you control what they think you control how they act.  Right now, the public believes what we want them to.  If the public was to have a high regard for the truth, then what they believed would be out of our control.  And that is what this research is all about, the truth.  You can’t control the truth, only lies.

A – But this is such a small thing, just a tiny research project in western Pennsylvania.

S – You’ll learn.  You don’t wait until a fire is big until you put it out.  You put it out while it is still small enough to handle.

A – You’re right of course.   (pause in conversation as they continue walking down hall) It was very fortunate that you found someone to help keep a surveillance on what was happening at the university.

S – It wasn’t that much, there is always someone who doesn’t place much value on the truth.  They are very easy to come by.  Ah, here is our girl.  (walking up to a young lady)

S – (to aid) I want you to meet Angie Miller of the Hummingbird research.  (turning to Angie) I think I have the funding in place that you need to kickstart your new research, it was something to do with sound waves and their delusional effects on people, wasn’t it?

Angie – Yes sir.  I am anxious to get started.

S – We can use someone like you.  I believe you have a bright future.  Might have to put some shades on though.

Angie – I can do that.

Scene 17 (second and final meeting with Dr Sinclair)

(J drives up to Dr Sinclair’s home, gets out of car and walks up to the door and rings bell, wife answers the door)

L – Hello James good to see you again.

J – Hello Laura, good to see you, I hope you’re feeling well.

L – Yes, Charles keeps me so busy I don’t have time to be anything else.  And you?

J – Fine, fine.  Is Charles in?

L – He’s around back.  (J enters and walks through house toward the back yard, noticing the Christian sayings he remarks as he waves his hand toward them)

J – This all make a lot more sense now.  I guess it is just a matter of perspective.

L – Some people would call it perspective.  I prefer to call it understanding.  Perspectives can change at the drop of a hat but understanding based on truth will never change.

J – I am glad we’re on the same side.

L – (touching J’s arm lightly with a slight smile) And we will be throughout eternity.

J – Eternity.  (Pauses) Strange, but eternity sounds very comforting somehow.

L – (smiling) It does, doesn’t it?

(Charles stands up and holds out hand to J)

C – I was hoping we could meet again.

J – Good to see you, Charles. (they both sit down, silence for a few moments, a sense of peace)

C – You seem different since our last meeting.

J – Oh?

C – Yes, there seems to be a peace about you that wasn’t there before.

J – (Smiling) Yes, I guess there is.  I definitely feel more peaceful.  You don’t seem surprised though.  I’m starting to think nothing surprises you.

C – Its simple.  If you had followed a different path than you did, you would have never called me again.  Everything that I have to say about the truth would become as some say, only relative.

J – Seems that the truth is relative is a rash statement used to support what you want to believe.  The truth IS unchanging.  It is our perspective that makes it seem to change.

C – Have you been having philosophical discussions with Laura?

J – Only briefly.  She packs a wallop in her statements.  I need time to digest them a little before I move on to the next one.

C – She helped me a great deal in my research.  She was one of the test subjects and helped confirm that this tone is in everyone, at least initially.  She also came up with most of the questions.

J – I can see how she would be helpful.  (silence)

J – I guess you know they kicked me out of my lab.  If I don’t sign a paper recanting my findings, they will fire me and I will be blacklisted.

C – Yes, I know. And what are you going to do.

J – Well, I kind of got used to the truth and I think I want to hang on to it.  I know it won’t be easy but neither is having grad students that goes behind your back.

C – I am so sorry about that.  It was my co-researcher that went behind mine.  It is a tough pill to swallow.  Very bitter, very bitter.

J – Well I guess the big question now is what next?  I have no way to communicate with Him and my questions now grow every day.

C – Your questions should grow, but never, ever let them grow beyond your faith and trust in God.

J – That is something else I have to get used to, calling this voice God or Jesus.  It is strange on my tongue, but then again so is the truth.

C – This is now about the journey.  You can get comfort thinking about the destination but it is too far away to think much about except that it is a place that will bring you joy whenever you hear the truth.  The journey has one goal.  To prepare you for an eternity of truth.  Pick you out a place to worship the truth, to worship God, and use his voice to guide you into the truth.

J – But I don’t have access to the equipment anymore to hear God’s voice.

C – You never needed that equipment.  God used that as an analogy to open your eyes.  He has used analogies many times in the Bible.  The real, true voice is in everyone.  It is down deep in the center of our souls just as the voice you heard in the lab was down deep in the center of our body, we lose that voice when we turn life around to be all about us.  This is the calling the Bible talks about.  You have heard God’s calling from a machine and that amazed you.  God’s calling is in everyone’s heart.  It is to every man, woman, and child.  When we search for the truth it gets louder, when the truth becomes a burden or inconvenient, it becomes distant, dimmer.

J – So how does one listen?

C – You listen with your heart first which is what you did when you gave it to Jesus.  He is the only being that can speak directly to your heart, no other.  That is why we recoil sometimes at His voice, it is foreign to us, we don’t have a reference for it.

J – Then we need to hear through our hearts? Our soul?

C – That is the ultimate goal.  Until we achieve that God has given us a few easier avenues of communication.  The Bible will lay a foundation.  You will find it cryptic just as the voice was but if you ask the right questions, you will always get an answer.  His Spirit will always reinforce whatever truth you find no matter what the source.  And as you know, there are many out there that would hide the truth by changing it even ever so slightly.  God’s Spirit will give you more detail talking to you through your thoughts or events in your life such as what you found when you bumped into me that day at the redlight.

J – I would have never found you if that had not have happened.  Angie sabotaged our meeting.

C – All these are ways to open your heart to the truth in a greater way.  But once you open your heart to God’s voice, reality will flood in like a great light on your soul.  We are like those animals that are stuck in a cave so long they start losing their sight.  When the light does come to them it feels like it is a harmful thing instead of for our good.

J – I can feel that, it does feel like someone getting adjusted to the light and you have to squint not to be overcome by it.

C – You will get used to the light.  The trick is to keep opening your eyes more and more so that you grow.  There are some that have gotten used to the light and quit trying to open their eyes.  They actually start closing them again.  They go back to what they used to be and think their eyes are still open.

J – Sounds both sad and scary.

C – It is both.  This is what happened to Dr. Edwards.  He was thrilled when our research started to take off with all the new things that we were learning but after he got adjusted to the knowledge, he started questioning the truth behind it.  I tried to get him up on the table to show him the tone was in him as well and let him ask his own questions but by the time he consented it was too late.  He was no longer looking for the truth but a way to prove me wrong.  When we turned the receiver on there was nothing.  No tone, no voice, nothing.

J – Is that possible.

C – Yes and that is the scary part.  This question ARE YOU LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH is a calling that all have.  We are to seek the truth.  It is one of our primary goals given by our creator.  It leads us to God.  But if the truth has no value to us at all, if it is something we have no desire to ever have, then we can lose that calling, permanently.

J – I’m sorry to hear that for Dr Edward’s sake.  No hope?

C – None that I know of.  God realized when He made us that not all were going to accept the truth.

J – What happens to those who won’t accept God as truth.

C – Those that accept truth will be forever coming into a greater awareness of the truth.  Those that do not accept the truth will be forever coming into a greater delusion and sense of unreality, or untruth as it might be called.

J – I need to watch my footsteps then.

C – With great care.  Even though you need to get grounded in a church, they too can be a stumbling block.  For instance, many churches today put most all their emphasis about this life, how Christ can make this life better, how He can make you happy in this life, how this can be your best life.  That will take you into a dark place.  The truth is much more important than anything, any relationship, any work or action that we will ever do.  It is all about preparing for the next life.  We use this life like a carpenter uses tools to form a structure.  Our structure is the soul.  This is the harvest God will reap, souls.  Never forget that for yourself or for others.

J – I won’t.   (pauses – reflecting)

J – I’ve got to go but I would like to come back again if I could.

C – We will talk again, but you need to transition from me as a source of truth to God.  He will hear every question just by thinking about it.  Do you have a Bible?

J – No, come to think about it, I’ve never owned one.

C – Laura will give you one.  Yor are in for a great many surprises.  Prophecies, God’s plan, steps to God.  It truly is a wonderful adventure.

J – I think I will enjoy the peace a few more days before I get real involved in the adventure.

C – Let every man work out his salvation in fear and trembling.

J – What?

C – You’ll see.

(J stands up and pauses)

J – I only wish I could have helped Hannah.  The one person I was supposed to help, that little girl, I did absolutely nothing for. Nothing.  Would it help to tell them my story?

C – About giving your heart to God?  Yes.  About the tone?  They would not believe you.  Hannah is too young.  And James…

J – Yes.

C – If it makes you feel any better, we all come to a point where the calling becomes very dim for a while.  It is when we separate ourselves from God for our own purposes.  What God brings into our lives becomes of little value so the tone becomes inaudible to the human ear.

J – You mean Hummingbird….

C – She has already passed that point.  I wished in my heart she hadn’t but she has.  Children are so beautiful to see in their innocence.  It is like seeing some of God through a smokey glass.

J – Thanks.  Thanks for everything.

C – God bless.

J -Yes God blesses and blesses and blesses……   (trails off as he walks away)

Scene 18 (Hannah’s parents not dealing well with stress)

(parents at home talking about Hannah and the problem, mentions that there has been no cure for her from doctors or the research team, Hannah has been told not to come back to daycare)

M – Tom, I had to get Hannah again today.  She fell asleep and the humming sound scared the children.

F – Well what about the place over on 15th street

M – I don’t know what we are going to do.  I’ve got to work and we have gone through all the daycare facilities that are close.  What are we going to do Tom?

F – I don’t know.  I don’t have any answers.

M – But you are her father.

F – I don’t know!  What you want from me?  I didn’t ask for this.  I don’t know how to stop it and I’m getting so that I don’t care.  You are her mother.  I am the breadwinner; you keep up with the rest.

M – You cannot put this off on me.  I have done everything I can, everything I am supposed to, I have been loving, kind, and patient but I don’t know how much more of this I can stand.  You are growing more distant from me and Hannah.  We need you here.

F – I am here.  I am here more than anyone else would be but I need a break too. I have to get some space to clear my head.  I will be back after a while.

M – We have to figure this out.  We both have to go to work in the morning.  Get back here.

F – You want some help?  You want some help?  Here, here is some help (takes a vase and throws it against the wall narrowly missing the mother, camera pans to where you can see mother and father turn to see Hannah standing in the door watching with tears in her eyes.)

Scene 19 (Daycare – (A week into new daycare))

M – I am sorry Hannah that you have to move around so much but please, please don’t take a nap.  Not even a little one.  We are running out of daycares to take you.

H – Yes mommy, I will try to be good.  (mother drops Hannah off and leaves)

(Hannah is being ridiculed – she takes a nap; the tone starts and scares the children.  They bully her and follow her around, she finally gets a small break and is playing with her doll, they come back and start harassing her again, frustrated she picks up some mud and throws it in the face of one of her bullies.)

M – (after mother picks up Hannah from daycare – driving in the car on the way home) Why did you do that Hannah?  You’ve never tried to hurt anyone before in your whole life?

M – Sweetie, tell mommy why you did that.  Why did you throw mud on that little girl?

H – You want me to grow up don’t you mommy and be a big girl?

M – Of course I do but you don’t have to throw things.

H – But daddy does.

Scene 20 (Silence)

(that night parents standing in the doorway of Hannah’s room, parents tired, beyond worry to the point of resignation, mother says to father)

M – Hannah had a tough day.  I’m afraid our little girl is coming to find out about life in ways I was hoping that she never would.

F – It has to happen sometime.

M – (Looks at father angrily).  Does it?  Does it really?

(they stand there and watch Hannah sleep waiting for the tone to start)

M – It is starting a little later tonight isn’t it.

F – Yeah, give it a minute (minutes pass and still nothing)

F – Could it be? Could she have finally outgrown that awful noise, that tone?

M – I hope so, I hope we never hear that tone calling out to her again.

Scene 21 (Life flashing before our eyes.)

(picks up where last scene left off, camera moves from parents back to Hannah sleeping in bed, flashes to following)

1)  Hannah a little older 10 -12 years getting into a fight with another girl.  Hannah punching at the girl

2)  Hannah’s parents break up in big fight, father leaves as Hannah looks on from a secluded section of room

3)  Hannah taking her first drink with friends at sleep over 13 years

4) Hannah out partying 16 years, boys show interest in fact that she is drunk

5) Hannah in fight with boy in car 19 years, left on street

6) Hannah 32yrs on street corner where there is a church, she is looking worn and tired goes into church where preacher is preaching on salvation.  She listens,

P – God is calling out to all who will listen.  He has always been calling.  Though His voice is faint in your heart it is still there.  Always asking for you to come back to where God can love you like you both want Him to, Won’t you come to Him.  He knows you.  He knows you better than you do.  He knows that you long for that innocence that you once had when God called and you listened…  (fainter) come back….

Hannah’s heart starts breaking as she remembers the tone.  Feels an aching and a longing to be that innocent little girl again.

H – (to herself) Innocence.  I remember, (flashes back to little girl handing cupcake to bully) I remember.  It was wonderful.  Could I ever get it back? (breaks down, sobbing)

Walks to the alter and gives her heart to Jesus.  Tone starts inaudibly and grows in background as all rejoice at her redemption (tone not noticed by any) (outside of window you see a hummingbird dancing and looking in the window) (scene fades into final scene)

Scene 22 (Final scene flashes across the screen by itself as tone gets louder)

The Calling

Are you looking for the truth?
